The story told in 'Only the Brave' is about the 100th/442nd infantry battalion in the American army a battalion which were Japanese-American soldiers. They should have gone with the original - Granite Mountain. This truly was the tale of forgotten heroes in World War II, and it is a movie that should be seen by anyone who has an interest in the events of World War II. Oh, and I wasn't keen on the title at all. A classy performance, that is probably better than the film deserves. The true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots from Prescott, Arizona shows us the lives. A searing portrait of war and prejudice, Only the Brave takes you on a haunting journey into the hearts and minds of the forgotten heroes of WWII - the Japanese-American 100th/442nd. Josh Brolin is fine in the lead, but it's Jennifer Connelly that really adds some gravitas. This film grips you, thrills you, and leaves you quite emotional. I could have done without all the flag waving, constant high-fives, and cheese that accompanied most of the first half though.įor a film about dealing with forest fires, it doesn't have the spectacular set pieces of something like Backdraft, but instead chooses to concentrate on the more practical side of the proceedings. Having said that, it did meander plenty, before getting to anything truly emotive. Certainly an interesting choice for director Kosinski following Tron Legacy and Oblivion, both of which I had a blast with (not to mention their big cg eye candy).Īs a 'based on true events' depiction, it wasn't half bad, and had a particularly affecting third act.
